Manchester United have reportedly made an offer to sign a Borussia Dortmund star.

With a new manager expected to take charge of the team when Ralf Rangnick's interim term concludes, the Red Devils are set to bolster their side in the next transfer window.

Although the club has been widely linked with midfield and attacking targets, the Old Trafford outfit has now reportedly ramped up its efforts to sign a defender.

Per German outlet Bild, the 13-time Premier League champions have made a €30 million (R511 million) offer for Dortmund centre-back Manual Akanji.

The proposal is said to include an annual salary of €15 million (R255 million) over four years for the player.

It is further claimed that the Swiss international has already declined an offer to extend his stay at BVB, with his current deal running out at the end of next season.

The 26-year-old arrived at Signal Iduna Park from FC Basel in 2018, and has gone on to make 150 appearances for the Bundesliga side.

United have been thin in defence over the course of this season, with Eric Bailly and Raphael Varane have missed a combined 17 games through injuries and illness, while Phil Jones is unfavoured by the manager despite his recent return from a long-term knee injury.

Captain Harry Maguire has also come in for some criticism for his displays at the back this season.
