United are yet to get any deal over the line ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, while the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have completed a few signings already.
Despite that, it appears clear the Red Devils are keen to secure the signature of FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who is said to be Erik ten Hag's top target for this window.
Negotiations, however, have not gone smoothly, with no agreement having been reached between the parties involved despite several weeks of reported interest in the player.
De Jong also initially insisted he has no intention of leaving the Camp Nou, but it is believed he has begun to come around to the idea of moving to the Premier League.
The big issue slowing down talks seems to be centred around Barca's asking price for the Dutchman, which is said to be a package worth €100 million (R1.6 billion), according to the Spanish outlet Sport.
It is claimed the Red Devils are not willing to exceed €80 million (R1.3 billion) in total, including an initial fee and add-ons.
It is further reported that the English giants have threatened to end negotiations with the Blaugrana due to the sizable fee the Catalans are demanding.
A source close to the Premier League club was quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: "We want De Jong, but we won't be Barca's saviour from their financial issues.
"We will only sign him if it's a reasonable price."
