Quincy Promes could now find himself in even more hot water as police in his country are said to suspect him of being involved in organised crime.

In December 2020, the Spartak Moscow forward was arrested after stabbing his cousin on the knee at a family gathering. He was initially charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault, and spent two nights in jail before being released.

Per Netherlands publications De Telegraaf, the ex-Sevilla star was recorded confessing to stabbing his relative via wiretapped phone calls.

It is reported that his communication lines were tapped because the authorities have suspicions he is linked to a drug syndicate, although prosecutors have not confirmed their exact reason for spying on him.

Promes' weekly communication with family members who are in jail for drug trafficking and money laundering has raised concerns, with those relatives having allegedly paid a huge sum of cash for a 4 000kg supply of cocaine worth £100 million (R1.9 billion), although the shipment was intercepted in Antwerp, Belgium, in April 2020.

It is further claimed that transcripts of the wiretapped phone calls reveal that the former Ajax Amsterdam star had intended to kill his cousin when he stabbed him.

With the case ongoing, the 30-year-old has continued to play for Spartak, and has scored in the club's past two games.
