PFA Player of the Year 2018/19: Virgil van Dijk becomes fifth defender to lift prestigious award

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk became the first defender in 15 years to lift the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) player of the year award.
The towering centre-back and Dutch compatriot Vivianne Miedema of Arsenal have been crowned at the prestigious event at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Sunday evening.
Van Dijk, who moved to Anfield in January 2018 from Southampton for £75m has helped the Reds record 17 clean sheets this season and becomes the first defender since John Terry in the 2004/05 season to lift the coveted honour.
"It's pretty difficult to put into words," he said, as per BBC Football. "I think it's the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted player of the year by the players you play against every week. It's special. I'm very proud and honoured to receive it."
Manchester City duo Raheem Sterling and Georgia Stanway named as young players of the year respectively.
