Real Madrid congratulate Cristiano Ronaldo on all-time goalscoring record

LaLiga giants Real Madrid have congratulated Cristiano Ronaldo on becoming the world’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Ronaldo is believed to have broken former Austria and Czechoslovakia star Josef Bican’s longstanding world record on Tuesday when he netted his 761st and 762nd career goals during Juventus’ 2-1 Coppa Italia win over Inter Milan, although some claim he had already done so with his 760th goal last month.

Nonetheless, the Czech Football Association previously disputed the validity of the record, claiming instead that Bican scored 821 goals during his career, but Ronaldo has been widely reported to have surpassed the officially recorded tally of the legendary striker.

The 35-year-old’s former club Real Madrid, where he scored a club-record 450 goals, have recognized this feat and took to social media soon after to congratulate the five-time Ballon d’Or winner on the remarkable achievement.

"The top goalscorer in our club’s history and now in world football. Congratulations, @Cristiano!" Los Blancos shared on Tuesday evening in posts across the club’s various social media platforms.

The record is, however, likely to remain disputed due to the loss of historical information over time, while others claim that Pele is in fact football’s greatest-ever goalscorer, with the Brazil legend said to have score more than 1000 goals during his playing career.
