Less than two full seasons into his time with Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo has now claimed a small piece of Serie A history after breaking a goalscoring record that had stood for more than 15 years.

The Bianconeri returned to league action on Monday for the first time since the suspension of football due to the coronavirus, and recorded a comfortable 2-0 away win over Bologna courtesy of goals from Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner's goal, which arose from a 23rd-minute penalty, saw him overtake countryman Rui Costa to become the outright leading Portuguese goalscorer in the competition's history, with 43 strikes in 54 matches.

Costa, who starred as an attacking midfielder for Fiorentina and AC Milan, netted 42 times over a 12-year period in Italy's top flight, with his final goal for the Rossoneri being scored against Brescia on 9 April 2005.

Ronaldo's latest effort also took him to 22 goals for the 2019/20 campaign, which keeps his slim hopes alive of reeling in current top goalscorer Ciro Immobile (27) for the season's Golden Boot award.
