UEFA Champions League match report FC Porto v Liverpool 17 April 2019

Liverpool progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after thrashing Porto 4-1 in the quarter-final second-leg on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp made three changes from the win over Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, as James Milner Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi were handed starts as the Reds looked to build on their 2-0 first-leg win.

Moussa Marega should have opened the scoring for the Portuguese side in the early stages after getting clear chances but he was denied by the brilliance of the Reds goalkeeper Alisson.

Sadio Mane settled the nerves for the visitors with the opener in the 26th minute after he slotted home from close range at the back post following a brilliant pass from Mohamed Salah.

Yacine Brahimi almost brought Porto level three minutes later with a snap-shot from just outside the box but Alisson was equal to the task.

The encounter got scrappy in the closing stages of the first stanza but the hosts had a penalty appeal on the stroke of halftime after Virgil van Dijk appeared to have brought down Marega inside the box but the referee was not convinced.

Klopp’s charges kept their shape well at the back in the early stages of the second stanza, drawing the hosts out of their own half and they found space to exploit in the 65th minute as Salah doubled their lead with a cool finish past goalkeeper Iker Casillas following a defence splitting pass by Trent Alexander-Arnold in a break-attack.

Eder Militao pulled a goal back for the Portuguese outfit three minutes later with a powerful header, although the goal was a mere consolation for the Portuguese giants.

Second-half substitute Roberto Firmino put the game beyond doubt 13 minutes before time with a glancing header past Casillas following a well-weighted cross from Henderson, 1-3 and 1-5 on aggregate.

Van Dijk got the fourth goal for the Reds with six minutes remaining, nodding home a cross from Mane to make 6-1 on aggregate as the Reds will now face FC Barcelona in the semi-finals.
