DCS spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said Madiba was held in the facility’s single-cell section because he was facing another charge linked to an earlier escape.
Madiba is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and violating his parole conditions.

Nxumalo said preliminary information suggested that Madiba managed to break through the burglar-bar door of the single cells.
“Preliminary information indicates that offender Madiba cut through the burglar-bar door of the single cells. DCS has activated its security detail and is working with other law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the escapee as a matter of urgency,” said Nxumalo.
The department has now activated its security teams and is working with other law enforcement agencies to track Madiba down and bring him back into custody.
Officials in hot water
The escape also raised questions about the prison’s security.
Eight officials have been served with notices of contemplation of suspension while the investigation into how Madiba escaped is under way.
DCS launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, including security measures at the correctional centre.
Nxumalo said the probe would establish how the escape happened and whether negligence or a security breach contributed to it.
Public urged to help
DCS is appealing to members of the public to alert law enforcement immediately if they have information that could help locate Madiba.
“Correctional Services has also instituted a full-scale investigation into circumstances surrounding the escape, including the security measures at the facility,” said Nxumalo.
“This is to establish how the escape occurred and to determine whether any negligence or breach of security contributed to the incident.”
The department said all necessary measures have been taken to trace Madiba and return him to custody.
