Graham Potter is being backed by the Chelsea board after calls for him to be sacked

With Graham Potter having lost his fifth game in his past nine matches this past weekend, Chelsea have reportedly come to a decision regarding the English tactician's future.

On Saturday, bottom-of-the-table Southampton completed a league double over the Blues after a James Ward-Prowse free-kick condemned the west Londoners to a 1-0 defeat.

The loss means that, of the nine Premier League games Potter has managed since the 2022 FIFA World Cup concluded, the two-time European champions have failed to win seven of them.

While this kind of form would likely have been a sackable offence for Chelsea managers under the previous regime, the club's current hierarchy have decided that they will not fire Potter any time soon, according to the Daily Mirror.

Having signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Stamford Bridge in September, it seems that Todd Boehly and his co-owners want to stick with the 47-year-old.

The club's supporters made their feelings known after their second successive defeat in all competitions on Saturday as they jeered and booed the team off the pitch, and while Potter might have the backing of the board, he has admitted that he knows he is under pressure.

"After a 1-0 defeat at home, any criticism you get is understandable," the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager said.

"We've had a tough period and are integrating young players into the Premier League.

"When results don't go your way, it's tough.

"I'm not arrogant enough to say that their opinion isn't worth articulating. My job is to help the team and work through a team period.

"The truth is we took a step back with our performance in the first half. Our response in the second half was good, but it wasn't enough."
