On Sunday, the 20-time English champions suffered a painful defeat at the hands of their city rivals, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden each scoring hat-tricks in what was an emphatic performance at the Etihad Stadium.
A second-half strike from Brazilian winger Antony and a late brace from Anthony Martial saw Ten Hag's side make the game appear less one-sided, but City's first-half dominance that had already put the match to bed.
Speaking on Wednesday ahead of United's UEFA Europa League clash against Omonia Nicosia, the Dutchman suggested he was appreciative of the outcome of the derby as it shows his side exactly where they need to improve.
"Now we get a reality check with Man City, we know we have to step up," he said, according to The Irish Times.
"So, thank you for the lesson, Pep and City. We will take that and we have to understand we have to do things much better."
The Red Devils are currently sixth in the Premier League on 12 points, while Guardiola’s City are second on the table, having picked up 20 points from their first eight matches.
