Julian Alvarez and Rico Lewis were recalled to the Citizens line-up while talisman Kevin de Bruyne was only fit enough to make the bench.

It took the visitors 15 minutes to find the breakthrough as Erling Haaland saw his strike hit the upright, before Alvarez was on hand to poke home the rebound.

Bournemouth did look lively at times, but it was City who bagged a second goal on 28 minutes when Phil Foden turned provider to tee up Haaland for his 27th league goal, which is a new record for the club after beating Sergio Aguero's 26.

The hosts struggled to get City off the ball in the first half but did look lively with a couple corners in the latter stages of the stanza, although Ederson was largely untested.

However, Bournemouth conceded a third goal just before the break when Philip Billing's poor back pass was intercepted by Phil Foden, who controlled well before firing past Neto.

City only needed five minutes to add a fourth goal in the second half when Alvarez reacted quickest to loose ball before volleying home his second on the night.

With City comfortably leading, Pep Guardiola withdrew the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri for Kalvin Philipps and Sergio Gomez for the final 30 minutes of the second half.

The visitors nearly added a second goal soon after when former Bournemouth defender latched onto a loose ball outside the box before unleashing a powerful strike that was palmed away by Neto.

Bournemouth did bag a consolation with seven minutes to ago, as Jefferson Lerma got on the end of Jordan Zemura's cross to volley home and deny Ederson his 100th league clean sheet.
