With it appearing likely that Sergio Busquets is playing his final season for Barca, the Blaugrana are believed to be looking to replace their iconic holding midfielder with an equally technical successor, and Ruben Neves could be the heir to Busquets' throne.

According to Sport, the Catalan giants are at an advanced stage in their pursuit of the Portugal international and Wolverhampton Wanderers star, with Neves' representative, super-agent Jorge Mendes, having a good relationship with the five-time European champions.

Last week, the former FC Porto midfielder spoke of his admiration for the LaLiga club, admitting he would join Xavi Hernandez's side if a transfer was possible.

"If you ask in general, all players want to play for Barca! It's one of the best clubs in the world," Neves said, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

"It's a privilege for me to be linked to this team.

"Who wouldn't want to play for Barcelona? It's normal."

However, Barca believed to be yet to approach the closing stages of a deal for Neves as they are still weighing up other options, such as Martin Zubimendi, Youri Tielemans, Kante and Jorginho.

Wolves are reportedly asking for €50 million (R902 million) for their star midfielder's signature.

Neves has also been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, speculation he has been tight-lipped about, but judging by his recent comments, he could be more open to joining Barca instead.
