One of Orlando Pirates’ latest signings is likely to see out his contract at his current club while his move to the Soweto giants will be expected to take place at a later stage.

A move to the Buccaneers for AmaZulu midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula has been agreed to between the parties involved, with the 33-year-old having signed a pre-contract with the PSL giants, although chances of him making a move now are unlikely, according to sources.

Earlier indications had been that Usuthu would be willing to allow the central midfielder to make the move before the January transfer window closes tonight.

However, the switch would have been possible only if the KwaZulu-Natal giants were to get some form of compensation for the star whose commitment to the team has been second to none since joining the side in 2020 from Highlands Park.

Makhaula is currently injured and has been a notable absentee from coach Romain Folz’ line-ups in the last two matches.

The player’s existing contract with the Durban-based club expires in June.

In January last year, AmaZulu decided to end Siyethemba Sithebe’s season prematurely after the midfielder signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs.

As a result, the dreadlocked player sat out the second half of the 2021/22 campaign in the stands as he was no longer considered for official matches at the KZN giants before he made the switch to Amakhosi.

With Makhaula, things are viewed differently by the club as the player is still very much in the plans for Folz and his technical team up to until the end of the season, as confirmed by sources in the know.

“He is still in the plans and is one of the players that the club’s head coach (Folz) believes in. Expect him to be back in the team and playing once he recovers from injury,” said the source.
