The DStv Premiership took centre stage this past weekend with Orlando Pirates beating Swallows FC 4-1 in the original Soweto Derby on Friday night, to enhance their chances of finishing second behind run-away champions-in-waiting, Mamelodi Sundowns. This was the Buccaneers’ perfect response from their previous disappointing 1-0 loss in the Soweto Derby against arch-rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, before visiting the Dube Birds.
Amakhosi made a tough job of 10-men Richards Bay FC albeit beating them 1-0. The Rich Natal Boys suffered a double bow early into the match when Siyabonga Ngezana headed home from a Mduduzi Shabalala free kick in the eighth minute before seeing their goalkeeper, Omar Jamal Salim Magoola saw red card for handling the ball outside his area and preventing a goalscoring opportunity for Amakhosi’s Keagan Dolly. Despite what looked to be a perfect start for coach Arthur Zwane’s team, the match ended with a solitary goal that was scored before the opposition was reduced to 10-men. This was a fourth straight match that the Naturena-based club struggled against a team with a numerical disadvantage.
Monnapule Saleng scored a hat-trick against Swallows FC, playing a significant role to see the Buccaneers recording a 4-1 win against a team that gave him his DStv Premiership breakthrough, on loan from Bucs.
Cape Town City had to come from a goal down to collect maximum points away to Maritzburg United in a game coach Fadlu Davids’ side dominated and should have scored by a big margin, had it not been for their failure to convert chances and the mistakes that were capitalized on by the Citizens. Coach Eric Tinkler’s charges came back with a 2-1 win to propel themselves to a fifth spot on the log with 32 points.
SuperSport United’s January loan signee, Zakhele Lepasa, announced his arrival at coach Gavin Hunt’s club with a brace against Golden Arrows, inspiring Matsatsantsa a Pitori to a 2-1 win.
