What's the story?

US Sportswear giants Nike has unveiled its highly anticipated advert for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Titled 'GOAT Experiment', the advert sees football-loving scientists debate on who's the better talent between a current star and a retired legend, which spirals into a battle with old vs new.

This could be one of Nike's best World Cup adverts, which tend to serve as a trailer for the football showpiece. Let's take a closer look...

Nike World Cup advert

The 'GOAT Experiment' Nike ad sees World Cup winning star Kylian Mbappe take on previous winners such as Ronaldinho and Ronaldo Nazario.

The advert starts with two scientists debating about whether Mbappe is better than Brazilian icon Ronaldinho. They go on to use computer graphics to teleport Ronaldinho in his prime and current Mbappe.

The experiment then spirals into a football match of old vs new, perfectly nostalgic, and it sees current Cristiano Ronaldo and a 2006 version of him, teleported into the experimental football match.

Ronaldo Nazario also got the same treatment with his 1998 and 2022-self swooped into the action.

Other footballers who were teleported into this crazy Nike footballverse include modern stars Phil Foden, Leah Williamson, Sam Kerr, Virgil Van Dijk, Kevin De Bruyne and legends such veteran US Women's star Alex Morgan and Edgar Davids, who's directly involved in this year's World Cup at the Dutch National team assistant coach.

The ad's background music is fittingly Oingo Boingo's 'Weird Science' and concludes with a real version of R9 crashing the party and saying 'What the heck?'
