Lesotho's 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone earlier in the day sealed the Super Eagles qualification to next year's show-piece and they were looking to finish top of Group L.

The in-form Kelechi Iheanacho was joined in the attack by Napoli's Victor Osimhen as Ahmed Musa was only named on the bench by Gernot Rohr.

The Super Eagles had to wait until the 24th minute for a sight at goal, with Osimhen firing straight at the Benin shot-stopper while Henry Onyekuru tried his luck from distance moments later.

The visitors had a couple more opening towards the latter stages of the half though Iheanacho and Osimhen, with the latter going closest after seeing his shot saved.

It was clear that Osimhen was the danger man for Rohr's men, as he carved out a few more chances after interval although Benin shot-stopper Saturnin Allagbe was alert to the efforts.

After waves of attack, Nigeria had to wait until the third minute in second-half stoppage time for the only goal thanks to Paul Onuachu's strike to end Benin's impressive eight-year unbeaten record on home soil.
