Date: 26 December 2022
Venue: Gtech Community Stadium
Spurs' World Cup stars Harry Kane, Ivan Perisic and Heung-min Son were thrown straight into the line-up, altough French goalkeepr Hugo Lloris was only named on the bench,.
It was the home side who got the breakthrough on 14 minutes when goalkeeper Fraser Forster could only parry Mathias Jensen's shot into the path of Vitaly Janelt, who fired into an empty net.
Spurs, meanwhile, struggled to carve out any serious openings for most of the first half, with Son managing to register a couple efforts on target from distance although goalkeeper David Raya wasn't troubled.
Brentford did have the ball in the back of the net two minutes before the halftime break after rounding Forster to slot into an empty net, but the strike was ruled out for an offside.
Spurs' tough afternoon continued in the second half when Brentford doubled their lead eight minutes in as Toney was on hand to turn home Christian Nørgaard's glancing header.
The visitors did give themselves some hope on 64 minutes when Kane rose above Ben Mee to power home a superb header from Clement Lenglet's inviting cross.
Seven minutes later, the North London giants were back on level terms when Dusan Kulusevksi's low cross found Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who took one touch and placed one into the far corner.
Chances continued to fall at both ends in the final ten minutes as Kane struck the crossbar with a glancing effort while Toney lifted the ball over the crossbar at the other end with only Forster to beat.
That was to be the final big chance of the encounter as the two sides settled for a share of spoils, which will give Manchester United and Liverpool a chance to close the gap on the top four.
