Both Liverpool and Chelsea were unable to boost their top-four pursuit after playing to a goalless draw at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Premier League

Result: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

Date: 21 January 2023

Venue: Anfield

Jurgen Klopp made a number of changes from the loss to Brighton and Hove Albion, as James Milner came in for Trent Alexander Arnold while 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic started in midfield.

The Blues thought they had got off to the perfect start when Liverpool's failure to clear a corner ended with Kai Havertz tapping home, but the goal was ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for offside on four minutes.

Liverpool did look lively on the break at times, wit Mohamed Salah setting up Cody Gakpo soon after but the Dutch forward sent his powerful strike wide of the mark.

Chelsea continued to dominate and went close to breaking the deadlock on 33 minutes when Hakim Ziyech's free-kick found Benoit Badiashile, who saw his header turned away by goalkeeper Allison Becker.

That proved to be the final chance of the first half, as Klopp's charges struggled to register a serious attempt at Kepa Arrizabalaga's goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Blues manager Graham Potter looked to bench ten minutes into second half, as new signing Mykhailo Mudryk replaced Lewis Hall while Liverpool threw on Darwin Nunez for Naby Keita a few minutes later.

Mudryk was presented with a chance with 20 minutes left on the clock after being picked out by Ziyech at the far post, but the Ukrainian was let down by his first touch in the box.

With time running out, Liverpool carved out a chance when Nunez got to the byline and found Trent Alexander-Arnold, who sent a first-time strike just over the target from inside the box.

Neither side were able to find a winning goal in the closing stages of the encounter, as now both side nine points adrift of the top four.
