Having proved a pivotal figure in England's 6-2 victory in their 2022 FIFA World Cup opener, it seems the Three Lions could be without their captain Harry Kane for the next couple of games.

Gareth Southgate's men could not have got their World Cup campaign off to a better start as the 1966 champions put six goals past Iran on Monday.

Despite not being able to get on the scoresheet, Kane was at the heart of all that was good for the English in an attacking sense, and finished the game with two assists.

Unfortunately for the Tottenham Hotspur talisman, though, he could not complete the match after sustaining an ankle injury during the encounter.

What seemed like a precautionary measure in taking him off now looks to be a more serious matter.

As per The Sun, Kane will miss England's Group B clash with the USA on Friday, with the 29-year-old set to undergo further tests and treatment in Doha.

England boss Southgate remains hopeful, however, that his latest injury is not long-term.

"I think Harry's fine. It looked a bad tackle, but he carried on in the game," he told reporters regarding the striker's fitness.

"We took him off really because we felt it was a moment we could do that.

"It was good to be able to refresh the forward line not only to get the players on, but also to get the players on because there were some very close calls in who starts in those positions.

"We have some fabulous talent and we had players that, if we needed them to change the game, they could do it."
