Having found the back of the net in their 2-1 victory over Juventus in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe has broken a competition record previously held by teammate Lionel Messi.

In their final match of the 2022/23 Champions League group stage, Les Parisiens were looking to seal top spot when they travelled to Turin to face the Old Lady. Having put them to the sword at the Parc des Prince earlier in the competition, the outcome turned out to be the same at the Allianz Stadium.

Like in September when PSG beat Juve 2-1, the scoreline repeated itself, and once again it was a certain French superstar who condemned the record Serie A champions to their fifth defeat in the tournament.

Mbappe opened the scoring on Wednesday night, capping off an amazing display of individual skill by dispatching the ball into the back of the net from outside of the box.

The goal was Mbappe's 40th in the Champions League, making the 23-year-old marksman the youngest player to achieve that feat at 23 years and 317 days old.

According to Squawka, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner overtook the man who assisted his goal in Italy, Messi, in the process, almost 11 years to the day when the Argentine set the record when he was 24 years and 130 days old.

Mbappe is also the 17th player to reach the milestone, and the third French player, after Thierry Henry (50) and Karim Benzema (86), to do so.

The Paris native also returned to the summit of the Champions League goalscoring chart with his seven European goals this season, tied with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.
