A Portugal star has revealed how Cristiano Ronaldo really reacted to being benched at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, after reports claimed he wanted to fly home from Qatar.
Ronaldo Tipped For Move After Al Nassr
After scoring just one goal in his three group-game starts in the Middle East, the former Manchester United No. 7 found himself dropped to the bench for A Selecao's 6-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16.
Ronaldo's replacement for that match, Goncalo Ramos, brought even more attention to the captain's absence by scoring an emphatic hat-trick, and retained his place in the side for their quarter-final against Morocco.
At the time, it was suggested that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner reacted furiously to being left out and even threatened to leave the camp.
However, that is a story midfielder William Carvalho strongly denies.
"It was a complicated situation. He was already having problems with Manchester United," he told A Bola.
"He started playing in the national team, but then there was a game in which the manager didn't put him on and it's normal for Cristiano to have been upset. Any player would be; no one likes to sit on the bench.
"Cristiano Ronaldo was upset at having gone to the bench, but he was always with the team. Even though he wasn't playing, he always helped us.
"The team knew how to separate the problems that Cristiano had and that didn't affect anyone."
