Cape Town City remain winless after five matches played as they drew 1-1 with Stellenbosch FC in the Cape Derby on Saturday evening.
Result: Cape Town City 1-1 Stellenbosch
Date: 20 August 2022
Venue: DHL Stadium
The Citizens made only one change from their draw against Maritzburg United, as Fidele Ambina was recalled in place of Thabo Nodada while Stellies handed German defender Lasse Sobiech his debut.
The game got off to a quick start as Antonio Van Wyk came close to giving Steve Barker's charges the lead on eight minutes with a looping strike in the box that came off the crossbar after he was setup by Dean Van Rooyen.
City also had a big chance a minute later after Thamsanqa Mkhize scuffed a shot in the six-yard box on the path of Darwin Gonzalez, whose shot struck the bottom post from close range.
The game continued to open up from end to end and Junior Mendieta should have given the visitors the lead ten minutes before the half-time break unmarked at the near post after a square pass by Jayden Adams but his shot was smothered by goalkeeper Darren Keet.
Gonzalez eventually broke the deadlock for Eric Tinkler's troops just before the halftime break with a neat header in the box from Ambina's well-weighted cross.

Stellies were forceful coming from the break as Nhlanhla Mgaga came close to restoring parity with a looping strike that forced Keet into an outstretched save in the top corner.
However, City took over from there, as they pinned Stellenbosch in their own half but they could not break down a defence led by big centre-backs Sobiech and Mogamad De Goede.
Tinkler made a tactical and attacking change around the hour-mark as Jordan Bender replaced Craig Martin while Barker introduced Judas Moseamedi in place of Van Wyk for a different approach upfront.
The visitors had a better ball retention after that and Mendieta eventually levelled matters on 73 minutes with a free header at the back post after a cross by Fawaaz Basadien.
City took the game to Stellies in the closing stages and Bender had a chance to snatch the winner for the Citizens in stoppage time with a free-kick on the edge of the box but he skied his effort over the crossbar as the sides settled for a point apiece.
