There were ugly scenes as drama ensued soon after the four-goal thriller between Cape Town City and Marumo Gallants at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Citizens were in the lead on two occasions during the match from the boot of the ever-improving Khanyisa Mayo, but the home side had to settle for a point in the end. Bottom-placed Gallants were determined not to leave the Mother City empty handed, with goals from Lesiba Nku and Ranga Chivaviro doing the business for  Limpopo-based side.

Throughout the match, Dylan Kerr who joined Gallants in January in an ‘advisory position as a consultant’ was calling the shots from the stands and sending instructions to interim head coach Raymond Mdaka and the rest of the team on what he needed to be done on the field, including the substitutions.

After the match, an altercation ensued in the tunnel between Kerr and City coach Eric Tinkler and the players had to intervene to separate the coaches.

Some unprintable words were used, with both coaches visibly agitated.

Kerr and his team felt that there were some decisions from the match officials which went against them, although it is not clear why the anger was directed towards the home team coach at the end of the fixture.

Asked about the incident during the post-match press conference, Tinkler refused to comment on the matter.

It would seem that the relationship between the two coaches hasn’t been the best for some time.

In 2020, during his time with Black Leopards, Kerr spoke openly about directly contributing to Tinkler’s exit from Maritzburg United.

“When you think of it‚ my last game for Baroka was against Kaizer Chiefs and it cost Ernst Middendorp his job. My first game back with Black Leopards cost Eric Tinkler his job. It is something that I am not proud of. It’s a shame for Eric because I thought he did a great job prior to the bubble,” the coach was quoted saying at the time, in part.
