Chippa United extended their winless run to seven matches in the DStv Premiership after they rescued a 1-1 draw against Royal AM on Saturday afternoon.

DStv Premiership

Result: Royal AM 1-1 Chippa United

Date: 21 January 2023

Venue: Chatsworth Stadium

Royal AM made four changes to the side that lost against Maritzburg United, as Menzi Masuku got only his second start, Levy Mashiane and Mlungisi Sikakane only their first starts of the season while Jeffrey Dlamini was recalled.

Chippa brought three new faces in the line-up from their 1-1 draw against Cape Town City, as they bolstered by the return of Thabiso Lebitso while Siphelele Luthuli and Etiosa Ighodaro were both recalled.

Thwihli Thwahla were quick off the blocks as Motebang Sera gave them the lead within six minutes with a close-range shot after he was setup by Mashiane.

Chippa looked to get back into the game and threatened particularly on set-pieces but they could not make goalkeeper Hugo Nyame work in goal.

Royal AM continued to absorb the pressure and were looking to catch the Chilli Boys on counter-attacks but the visitors had the momentum, although they resorted to fruitless long range efforts, as they went to the break trailing by an odd goal.

Morgan Mammila's charges were forceful coming from the interval and Luthuli eventually had a shot on target just before the hour-mark after his low drive was saved in the bottom corner by Nyame.

Royal AM eventually looked for inspiration from the bench in the last 20 minutes as Mxolisi Macuphu replaced Sera for fresh legs up top and they shored up their midfield, as Jabulani Ncobeni came on for Masuku, in a tactical switch.

However, Chippa finally found the equaliser eight minutes before time after Ighodaro fired a low shot to the bottom corner from a cross by Ronaldo Maarman.

The game was there for the taking in the dying minutes and Luthuli almost secured all the points for the Chilli Boys with a shot towards the top corner that was plucked out by Nyame.

The sides eventually settled for a point apiece, as Chippa remained in ninth place on the log and Royal AM in tenth, both equal on 21 points.
