Several Kaizer Chiefs new players made their debut for the club against Royal AM, and Amakhosi star Khama Billiat heaped praise on one of them.

The Soweto giants opened their 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Royal at the Chatsworth Stadium, south of Durban.

New coach Arthur Zwane decided to start with four of Chiefs’ new boys, handing debuts Yusuf Maart, Siyethemba Sithebe, and Ashley Du Preez while welcoming back Zitha Kwinika after a seven-year absence, with Dillon Solomons coming in for the last 11 minutes of the game in the place of Njabulo Blom.

Despite suffering defeat, Zwane was pleased with how his troops performed, including all the debutants, with Billiat describing Ashley Du Preez, Chiefs marquee signing, as a ‘quality striker’.

“He’s [Du Preez] got speed, a very good touch, and he knows how to make himself free,” Billiat told the media during Amakhosi’s media open day at Naturena.

“It’s just a blessing to play with a striker like that. We’re happy to have him, and we are looking forward to having a great season with him.”

Fitness concerns and suspensions saw Zwane start the campaign in charge of Chiefs without Sifiso Hlanti, Kamohelo Mahlatsi, Sibusiso Mabiliso, and Phathutshezo Nange.

Chiefs will tackle Maritzburg United in their opening home encounter of the season on Tuesday evening at FNB Stadium.
