Edmilson Dove, the midfield pairing, and a not so young squad is among the issues pointed out by the Turkish coach, following his analysis of Chiefs.
Ertugral is no stranger to Chiefs, having enjoyed two separate stints at Naturena, first in 1999 and thereafter in 2007, although he now works as a technical advisor for the Turkish Football association.
The 63-year-old coach has been sharing his analysis on his LinkedIn page with a particular focus on Chiefs’ 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.
He shared the following findings.
Chiefs’ Midfield Pairing not working
“Chiefs’ tactical approach with two central midfielders in front of the defensive line is not functioning in defensive transitions. Both Players [Samkelo] Zwane and [Yusuf] Maart shadowing each other instead looking for the pressure points and protect the blind side for pocket runs or shoulder runs from the opponents. The change second half was very justified to bring in Mnguni [Siyethemba Sithebe]”.
Chiefs Need a Natural left centre-back
While Chiefs have signed Thatayoane Dithlokwe on a pre-contract from SuperSport United, he will only be making his way to Naturena in July, meaning that Edmilson Dove and Austin Dube remain Arthur Zwane’s options at left centre-back, something that is not working well according to Ertugral.
“The biggest problem for me are the two central defenders separated by far too often. Dove is a converted winger and don't have the expected reflexes from a central defender point of view. Often gets court in unnecessary dragging out of the collective to pressure and leaves gaps.
No stability and consistency at Chiefs
“I can see the current situation is far from reality with a “Building Process” that is been mentioned now more than 5 years. Coaches coming and going with players in and out since years. There is no stability and a consistency and lost completely the momentum. Chiefs have to maximize the specialist workforce to ensure quality development and provide appropriate level of high performance.
Are Chiefs Really A Young Team?
“The current squad is often mentioned as a young team. Its a perception. The team is on the age scale of the current PSL season on 6. Position with 26.3 years of average. There are young players in the team, but these doesn’t make the team a 'young team'.
