Junior ‘Aghahowa’ Khanye – a Kaizer Chiefs midfielder in his heyday – has weighed in on the burning issue of Amakhosi star Njabulo Blom’s contract in Naturena.

As reported by the Siya crew, Blom’s future at the Soweto giants is up in the air as he will see his contract expire in June next year and will be eligible to sign a pre-contract with any interested club in January.

With Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United believed to be monitoring the situation with the 22-year-old in Naturena, Khanye says the situation could have been avoided by finalising with the player’s contract earlier.

“I am surprised that Njabulo Blom hasn’t signed a contract extension yet at Kaizer Chiefs. It’s shocking. I don’t understand why Chiefs waited this long to take action on this issue. But, truly speaking, Blom started raising his hand and proving how important he is to the team not so long ago and maybe that is the reason why the club delayed.

People were starting to think that he would be one of the others from Chiefs development who failed to live up to expectations. For instance, it took me some time to understand what his best position is. I used to get confused whether he was a right-back or central midfielder,” said Khanye.

“For the past few months, the boy has been impressive, and it is not surprising that he has attracted interest from other clubs as per media reports. I hear that SuperSport United is interested in the player and that could mean he might end up at Sundowns if he goes to SuperSport. For the last two months, I have been very impressed with the boy hence I am saying I am surprised it has taken Chiefs this long to finalise issue of his contract.

“I understand that issues to do with contracts can take long but I would like to see Chiefs act quickly to finalise the matter so as to not lose Blom because after his transition from development to the senior team took longer, the boy is now matured and raising his hand to say he is among the best players at the club,” the footballer-turned-analyst concluded.
