
It is no secret that Mamelodi Sundowns boast the most valuable squad in the DStv Premiership; however, how does the Brazilians’ squad compare to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in millions?
Sundowns’ dominance in the league has been clear. The Brazilians have won the last five consecutive PSL titles and are well on course to lift a sixth in the 2022/23 season.

In addition to their local dominance, they have firmly established themselves as a force on the continent, where they managed to win the CAF Champions League in 2016.
Sundowns’ prowess shows a paradigm shift in power from perennial giants Chiefs and Pirates. While the three sides are often mentioned in the same breath as the country’s ‘Big three’, there is a considerable gap between them when it comes to their values on Transfermarkt.com.
According to Transfermarkt, Rulani Mokwena’s Sundowns squad have a market value of €25.5m (±R476m), the highest of any squad in South Africa.
Their Soweto counterparts lag behind the Chloorkop outfit with Orlando Pirates boasting the second most valuable squad with a market value of €16.7m (±R311m).
Chiefs, who have spent quite significantly at the start of the campaign boast the third most valuable squad in the league. Their market value estimated around €12.7m (±R237m).
Sundowns’ most valuable player, Peter Shalulile, has an impressive €2m (±R37m) market value, while for Chiefs, their vice-captain Keagan Dolly ranks as their most valuable player at €1.3m (±R24m). Pirates’ most valuable player is Deon Hotto with a market value of €1m (±R18m).
