Mamelodi Sundowns clinch 2022/23 DStv Premiership title

Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned DStv Premiership champions for a sixth successive season after SuperSport United dropped points against Chippa United.

The Brazilians are involved in CAF Champions League action on Saturday night, but will take to the field against Coton Sport as the newly crowned South African champions. Both sides came into the clash needing a win, especially SuperSport who started the clash in third position after Orlando Pirates defeated Richards Bay earlier in the day.

Gavin Hunt made one change from the defeat to Orlando Pirates, as veteran defender Siyabonga Nhlapo was recalled to replace the suspended Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.

Chippa, meanwhile, handed a start to Ronaldo Maarman in place of Andile Mbenyane in the side's only change from the stalemate with Sekhukhune United before the break.

It would be the home side that took the lead in the 21st minute when defender Ronald Pfumbidzai beat goalkeeper Ricardo Goss with a lovely strike from distance.

The visitors pushed for a way back into the encounter but were unable to carve out any serious openings at Stanley Nwabali's goal in the first half.

Hunt had re-shuffled the back in the second half to get his back into the contest, which saw Thamsanqa Gabuza replace Zakhele Lepasa while Mamour Niang and Jamie Webber came on just befor the hour mark.

The visiting side did get back on level terms in the 72nd minute when Gamphani Lungu got his first league of the season after firing past Nwabali.

Hunt's charges had opportunities to clinch a winning goal in the closing stages, but they were unable to profit as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils.

As a result, the draw sees Sundowns clinch yet another league title with seven matches left in the campaign.

Rulani Mokwena's charges will be back in league action on Tuesday when they take on Cape Town City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
