Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena says his perceived failure at Orlando Pirates has prepared him for his new role.

Last month Mokwena was appointed Downs’ new head coach in the wake of some unsatisfactory results which saw Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi assume the duties of first team coach and senior coach, respectively.

It is not Mokwena’s first time at the rodeo, however. He was thrusted into a similar role at the Buccaneers following the departure of Milutin Sredojevic to Zamalek in the 2019/20 season.

Mokwena’s record at the helm of the Buccaneers wasn’t as impressive as he would have liked, having managed only four wins, five draws and five defeats in his 14 matches in charge.

However, the young coach says he has taken lessons from his Pirates stint that has positioned him perfectly for the Sundowns hot seat.

“One of the most important characteristics I have had to develop is emotional intelligence. Having emotional intelligence has allowed me to see beyond myself which is very important in football. Self-absorption is detrimental because it makes one prone to personalizing everything and everything feels like an attack. Once you can focus on things outside of yourself, you can understand that everything is working for your own good. People often talk about how I failed at Orlando Pirates without understanding the context,” Mokwena told Sundowns Magazine.

“Three years later, I am in a similar position of having to assume leadership in a that is in a very difficult position. Being in this position has helped me because I have been here before. I am like David because I have already fought the bear.

“If I was still self-absorbed, I wouldn’t be able to realize that, now is the opportunity to use my experiences, strength, and knowledge that God has given. My personal experiences of pain and suffering have prepared me to face challenges today,” he concluded.
