What Turned Sundowns Off In Pule Bid

A stumbling block in Mamelodi Sundowns not being able to acquire the services of Orlando Pirates winger Vincent Pule, in a late bid, has been revealed.

The Siya crew broke the story last week that Sundowns made a late transfer bid for the services of Pule, who is believed to be admired by head coach Rulani Mokwena after their time together at the Soweto giants.

According to Siya sources close to the delicate deal, the former Bidvest Wits attacker had become a priority signing for the Chloorkop-based side but Pirates were initially reluctant to part ways with one of their prized assets.

However, as reported in edition 1310 of Soccer Laduma, the Sea Robbers put a price tag of over R10 million for the services of Pule.

It is understood that the 30-year old recently signed a new contract at the Houghton-based outfit and Pirates would only entertain an offer that would make financial sense.

Although money has never been a stumbling block for the Brazilians to get their targets after they paid multi-millions for the services of players such as Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams and Marcelo Allende, the Siya crew understands that the powers that be at Sundowns had reservations this time around.

According to Siya sources, what made the Brazilians to think twice about the asking price from Pirates is that Pule is turning 31 next month and may not be the right investment for the future, considering the steep price tag.

The players that Sundowns have acquired in multi-million transfer fees such as those mentioned above, have longevity and perhaps even a resale value.

From Pule's perspective, his career could actually get a boost at Pirates after a strong interest for his services from the reigning champions.

The soon-to-be 31-year old has featured in all five matches since he recovered from a recurring injury and scored a decisive goal in the Buccaneers' 3-1 win over Golden Arrows, which turned their fortunes around.

Pule's value in the market has also increased. The QwaQwa native was previously valued at around €800, 000 (+- R15,3 million) at the back end of 2022, by transfer market website

The left-footed attacker is now valued at €1 million (+- R19 million), although the valuation by the reliable website is not dictated by supply and demand.
