Two seasons ago, Thulani Hlatshwayo was the most valuable defender in the DStv Premiership, however, the veteran has seen a significant decline in his market value, although he has gained much more since his career-rejuvenating move.
A loss of €400k (±R7 million) is the loss ‘Tyson’ suffered following his disastrous two-season spell with Orlando Pirates according to Transfermarkt.com.
However, what the 32-year-old lost in market value, he gained in confidence, playing time and a revival of his career at SuperSport United.
The steely defender has been one of SuperSport’s most reliable defender this campaign alongside his central defensive partner Thatayaone Dithlokwe, under a familiar face in Gavin Hunt.
But how did the veteran coach revive the Soweto-born star?

“We play to his strengths. Like any footballer, don’t ask them to do things that they don’t do. For me, centre backs only mature after 30. Who are the best centre backs? If you go around the world, generally most of them are over 30. And I think in that position you need maturity.
“Whatever happened with him, happened, we all know. But it would have never happened if another scenario didn’t happen. We sold the club and everyone went,” he told journalists at the tournament launch.
So far this season, Hlatshwayo has made 13 appearances in all competitions for Matsatsantsa, who find themselves in the DStv Premiership’s top three after 12 matches played.
