SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has made an announcement on the future of Thamsanqa Gabuza.

Matthews confirmed to the Siya crew that the veteran striker will leave the club at the end of the season and explained why the club did not sell Gabuza in January, despite having three offers.

The 35-year-old from Ladysmith attracted interest from Stellenbosch FC and Royal AM, but SuperSport decided to keep the player until the end of the season, when his contract expires in June.

The former Orlando Pirates player joined Matsatsantsa in 2019 and has played an important role for the side, but he is now in the final few months of his time with the Tshwane outfit.

The club has already planned for life beyond the expiration of Gabuza's contract by signing Senegalese forward Niang during the January transfer window.

"We kept Gabuza when we could have let him go. We had three offers for Gabuza and we kept him, to have the firepower. We brought in Lepasa and brought in Niang a little bit for this season, but more a long-term target man because Gabuza is not going to stay with us at the end of the season," Matthews told the Siya crew after the club announced iKhokha as their new sleeve sponsor at an even held in Randburg on Wednesday morning.

Gabuza has made 17 appearances in all competitions for the club and has found the back of the net twice. Last season the former Golden Arrows striker banged in seven goals. The club is now planning for life without him going forward, but he will remain a key member of the team for head coach Gavin Hunt until the end of the campaign.

SuperSport, meanwhile, will host Cape Town City at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
