The 2023 State of the Nation Address (SONA) was held at Cape Town City Hall on 9 February 2023. This is the first SONA following the January 2022 fire of the National Assembly chambers.
The address, which aimed to set government priorities for the coming year and give President Cyril Ramaphosa the opportunity to speak to South Africa on the general state of the country, brought about the breaking news of the national State of Disaster due to the nation’s energy crisis, as well as the appointment of a Minister of Electricity.
Ahead of the address, Members of Parliament, government officials and prominent businesspeople took to the red carpet leading into Cape Town City Hall to show off their garments.
