It’s still a bit nippy, and chances are we’re still wearing beanies to keep our heads and ears warm. And let’s face it, they’re a definite must-have on those bad hair days. But, while it’s great that beanies come to our rescue when we need them the most, you need to keep in mind the impact on your hair.

Hairstylist Ncumisa Mimi Duma of Urban Mimz  offers the following dos and don’ts for beanies so you can keep warm and your hair happy at the same time:

DOs

  • Wear a beanie to protect your hair from cold and UV rays, dry scalp and fading colour
  • Opt for cotton or wool fabrics, to avoid getting allergic reactions and damaging your hair
  • Invest in a loose beanie to avoid getting migraines from a too-tight fit

DONTs

  • Don’t put tight material on your scalp. Wearing tight beanies can trap oils at the roots, leaving the hair very dry on the ends.
  • Avoid allowing your hair to get greasy. Oily hair obstructs the circulation of oxygen to the follicle. Dirt and  bacteria may also build up, potentially causing your hair to fall out

HAIR TIPS

In the long term you stand a chance to experience hair thinning if you wear beanies every day. Duma advises:

  • Keeping your beanies clean and doing a scalp treatment
  •  Not wearing beanies all day. Instead, give your hair some room to breathe

HAIRSTYLES TIPS  SUITABLE FOR BEANIES

Celebrity hairstylist Jawad Maphoto suggests that the ultimate hairstyles that go with beanies for this winter season are wigs and weaves. “Get a treatment before getting that weave or wig on. Long braids also look fashionable. Remember to keep your hair moisturised at all times,” he adds.
