The Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll has left the stage.
Tributes have been pouring in for legendary musician Tina Turner, who passed away at the age of 83.
In a statement shared from her family to CNN, the What’s Love Got to Do with It hitmaker died peacefully in her home in Switzerland on 24 May 2023 after a long illness.
Tina Turner’s – who was born Anna Mae Bullock – legacy is marked by her decades-long career in the music industry, making history with arguably one of the greatest comebacks in music after her 1984 solo career resurgence with the multi-platinum album Private Dancer at the age of 44.
She also made history as the first woman to make the cover of music and pop culture publication Rolling Stone in the same year, showing the world one can strive for greatness, no matter the age.

Tina’s life story was one filled with success, pain, and perseverance; from coming out of an abusive and tumultuous relationship with former duo partner Ike Turner to being inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Since her retirement in 2009, Tina shifted to philanthropy and self-care, co-founding the Swiss Beyond Foundation – which initiates the collaboration of musicians from all over the world – and staying true to her Buddhist beliefs.
“I very much lean into my faith – my Buddhist beliefs are my foundation. I am so happy to be retired – at 83, I’ve earned it – but the rituals that I’ve had since the early days are still with me. That includes spending time chanting in my little prayer room every day,” she told British Vogue in a April 2023 interview.
Industry colleagues and high-profile public figures alike – including former United States president Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Nomcebo Zikode, and Angela Bassett – have taken to their respective platforms, expressing their grief and gratitude, as well as special moments with Tina.
