Protective hairstyles are one of the best ways to protect our hair from the harsh weather environments we experience during the winter season. They keep the ends of the hair nicely tucked away and the options for protective hairstyles are almost limitless.
This can sometimes make it difficult to decide on which one to go for, and that's why we've compiled a short list of some of our favourite looks and hope that these can provide some much needed inspiration.

A protective style is any hairstyle that requires very little manipulation to the hair and allows it to be left alone while it grows. It should cover your hair’s ends so that your hair is not exposed. And even after choosing to do a protective style, you should still have a routine that keeps your hair nourished and well taken care of.
Here are 5 protective styles for you to consider for this season:
1. Flat twists/cornrows
Flat twists and cornrows are the easiest protective style for winter. You don’t necessarily need to head over to the salon for these and while they’re a simple and neat style, they are also great to wear under your wigs. Make sure to spray them with oils and water at least three times a week to keep your hair nourished.
You can even add hair extensions to achieve more length for this hairstyle.
2. Knotless Box Braids
Unlike normal box braids, knotless box braids - as the name suggests - don’t have the knots. Because of this, knotless braids are less painful than box braids – this makes for a good protective hairstyle because there is less pulling and breakage, especially on the hairline.

3. Faux Locs
Faux locs are a great protective style for winter, and all the other seasons of the year. This winter, butterfly locs are all the rage and you can wear them in a bob type of style if you want something different.
4. Bantu knots
If you need a hairstyle that is trendy but not too much admin, bantu knots should be your go-to. The best part about this hairstyle is that once you undo them, you’ll have a head full of perfectly defined coils!
5. Passion twists
While medium-sized twists are a great protective style, try out the passion twist style which is braided using an Afro-textured fibre. This look is stylish and perfect for the winter season.
