The conversation around gender and sexuality spans generations and, although many strides have been made in educating society about the difference between gender identity and sexuality and what they mean, there are still those of us who are either uninformed, ill-informed or even confused.
Much like everything else concerning creation, many of the terms on gender have evolved and will continue to do so with time, gradually becoming widely recognised. While it is understandable to be confused, it is even better to arm yourself with the necessary education to enable you to co-exist amicably with people of different gender identities.
The first and most important step is to ask any person you are meeting for the first time or haven’t seen in a long time how they prefer to be addressed – this is a polite and safe way to interact with others.
