The saying “black don’t crack” has often left many with the misconception that they shouldn’t go to certain lengths to protect their skin just because it’s got more melanin. And one such misconception is that it is not necessary to wear sunscreen regularly.

Healthline reports that this myth was perpetuated in the medical community as well, where the field of medicine has not given black people adequate dermatological care. Dermatologists had also admitted to not being trained properly on conditions in black skin.

However, according to a study, Melanoma (a type of skin cancer that is caused by ultraviolet exposure) is on the rise among black South Africans, making sun protection extremely essential to prevent people from getting the disease.

And while some black people may have a natural SPF of 13 in their skin, it is still lower than the SPF 30 that dermatologists suggest is effective against sunlight.

Here are 4 reasons why it's important to wear sunscreen daily.

1. Helps prevent skin cancers

The most important reason you should wear sunscreen is to lower your skin cancer risk. Daily SPF use, even in rainy or colder weather can help to protect your skin from harmful rays that cause cancer.

2. Prevents premature ageing

According to Dermstore, UV radiation causes the premature breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear. It also damages pigment-producing cells called melanocytes, resulting in the overproduction of melanin causing hyper-pigmentation.

The daily use of sunscreen can prevent this and help one to enjoy youthful skin for a longer period of time.

3. Protects you from heat exhaustion

According to the Fargo Centre for Dermatology, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be caused by being in direct sunlight for a long period of time. Wearing adequate sunscreen can help to prevent this from happening.

4. Healthier overall skin

Skin is healthier overall when you use sunscreen and products that are good for the skin simultaneously. Essential proteins in the skin like keratin are protected when sunscreen is applied. These proteins are primarily responsible for keeping the skin smooth and healthy both in appearance and function.
