Here’s how to properly steam your face at home to achieve the best results for your skin:

Step 1: Cleanse and exfoliate

Prepare your face by washing it with your facial cleanser. Follow it up by lightly exfoliating with a facial scrub or a DIY exfoliant.

Step 2: Prepare the steam

If you don’t have a facial steamer or facial sauna system, bring water to a boil in a large pot. Grab a big fluffy towel and pick a spot. Comfort is key, so if you’re doing this over a sink you’ll want to use a chair or stool that offers the right height. Otherwise, a bowl on a table will also work fine.

Step 3: Add essential oils

If required, add a handful of herbs or essential oils and stir. To soften dry skin, add rose water. For combination skin, add balancing grapefruit. For acne issues, add tea tree oil.

Step 4: Steam

Place a large towel over your head and place your face a good distance away from the steam. Do not place your face incredibly close, because you risk burning or causing your skin to swell. Steam for 5-10 minutes.

Step 5: Apply a facial mask

To treat your skin further, put on a facial mask shortly after steaming. You can even create your own facial mask using natural ingredients such as honey.

Step 5: Apply moisturizer

Apply a few splashes of cool water following your steam to close your pores (do the same when rinsing your mask).  Smooth on your moisturizer to seal the deal and to reap all the benefits of the steam.
