Illegal dumping a big stink for kasi!

ILLEGAL dumping is out of control in Ekurhuleni as the municipality tries to get its house in order.

Residents said they sometimes dump rubbish on Sihoko Street in Daveyton because waste trucks don't come.

A 'No dumping' sign was put up to discourage residents from throwing rubbish in the empty space next to the houses.

Some residents have since covered the 'No dumping' signage with paint and continued illegal dumping which has become a nightmare for homeowners who live nearby.

They said people also throw dead animals and stench becomes a health hazard.

One resident, Lebo More a resident near Elethu Daveyton Cheshire Home for the Disabled said: "When the sun is hot, the stench is unbearable. We struggle to stay outside in the shade of the trees."

A resident, Abednigo Mqhedlana said: "Apart from the bad smell, we struggle with rats because this is their feeding ground."

They told Daily Sun the space was previously intended for a hospital.

"We don't know how true this is. But we're appealing to the municipality to remove the rubbish," Abednigo said.

However, in Duduza some residents have are dealing with illegal dumping in the area. And those found to be illegally dumping rubbish in open spaces are warned.

Residents have put up signage with the writing: 'Sikhathele a bo Roto - No Dumping' (meaning, please don't dump here, we're tired of big rats).

Those who live near open spaces said since the writing on the wall, offenders think twice before dumping there.

Zweli Dlamini, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Municipality, said it starts with people stopping illegal dumping.

"The city will address the issue. It's unfortunate that the vulnerable are subjected to such illegal acts and irresponsible behaviour by some," Dlamini said.
