ORLANDO Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has dedicated his team's victory over Richards Bay FC to late Buccaneers supporter Charles "Makhalanjalo" Fantisi.
Pirates secured an important win in their Betway Premiership clash on Wednesday, 11 March, but the result was overshadowed by the sad news of the passing of one of the club's most recognisable supporters.
Fantisi, affectionately known as Makhalanjalo, died on Friday at a hospital in Carletonville, Gauteng after a short illness.
The passionate supporter became a familiar face at Pirates matches over the years. He was known for attending games shirtless, proudly displaying inspirational messages written across his chest while cheering on the Buccaneers from the stands.
Speaking after the match, Ouaddou said the loss of such a loyal supporter was deeply felt by the entire club.
"When we lose somebody like that, it's always a sad moment. He was part of us and part of our team.
"When the fans lose someone like that, it feels like the team has also lost a member. I want to send my condolences to his family and loved ones. May God protect them," said Ouaddou.
The Moroccan mentor said that the victory was dedicated to Fantisi and his family during this difficult time.
"I think we can dedicate this victory to his family," he said.
Despite the win, the 47-year-old coach admitted that his side still needs to improve in certain areas of their game.
Ouaddou said Pirates must become more clinical, particularly in the attacking third, where the team has sometimes struggled to convert opportunities.
"As a coach you always want to improve and get the best from your players every week.
"There are still some areas we need to work on, especially in the last third. This isn't something new for us, but we must continue working hard and helping the players improve," he explained.
However, Ouaddou praised the determination and fighting spirit shown by his squad, saying the team's character was evident even on a difficult night.
"I'm very happy with the character of the team. Even when it's tough and we are not at our best, the team still finds a way to win. That shows the mentality of the players," he said.
He stated that once Pirates reach their peak performance levels, the team will become even more dangerous.
"When we are really at our best, this team will fly," he added.
