Dozens of outstanding matters still need to be resolved, specifically 87 outstanding exceptions and 25 results that are still awaiting auditing.

Of the 87 exceptions, 79 are in eThekwini and eight are in Pietermaritzburg.

KwaZulu-Natal Electoral Officer Ntombifuthi Masinga also revealed that one results slip had been returned for reconciliation after the IEC’s system detected anomalies in the figures.

There is one that we have had to return because it wasn’t reconciling our system. It has got inbuilt parameters where it picks up any anomalies on our results. So it picks up that the reconciliation on that results slip was not in order, she explained.

Despite these issues, Masinga confirmed that no further counting or recounting is required.

“Where we are now, we are in a comfortable space in that every result has been captured in the province. There is no one we’re still counting. There is no one who is recounting anywhere,” she said.

The commission is working through the audits, exceptions, and national Section 65 objections (two of which originate from Pietermaritzburg) as they race to meet the November 11 deadline to publish the official results in the Government Gazette.

“So no matter what happens, by the 11th we should have gazetted the election results on the Government Gazette,” she said.
