Controversial Thembisa Hospital tender tycoon, Hangwani Maumela’s flashy Ferrari is officially heading for auction after his last-ditch attempt to block the sale was dismissed by the Pretoria High Court.
The Ferrari SF90 Stradale, which was seized by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in September 2025, will be up for grabs from Friday, 6 November, with bidding starting at R8 million.
The luxury vehicle has a minimum sale price of R9,5 million following an order by the Special Tribunal authorising its sale.
The auction will be handled by SIU-appointed curator, Jacobus Gideon Louw van Wyk, who approached the Special Tribunal in August 2026 for permission to sell the vehicle.
Van Wyk argued that keeping the expensive car in storage came with ongoing costs, including insurance and maintenance. He also maintained that selling it would help protect its value while generating money to maintain other assets preserved in the investigation.
However, Maumela and the MHR Maumela Family Trust trustees opposed the sale, arguing that the Ferrari could increase in value and should not be sold.

After the Special Tribunal gave the curator the green light, Maumela approached the Pretoria High Court in an urgent bid to stop the auction while appealing the decision.
But the court dismissed the application, finding that the appeal did not automatically suspend the Tribunal’s order.
The court also found that Maumela failed to demonstrate a clear right to stop the sale, reasonable prospects of success on appeal or irreparable harm if the auction went ahead.
The court further pointed out that the money raised would remain protected in an interest-bearing trust account until the civil proceedings were finalised.
Linked to alleged R2 billion looting
The Ferrari was among several luxury vehicles preserved by the SIU in September 2025 during investigations into alleged corruption and maladministration at Thembisa Hospital.
The investigation centres on allegations that about R2 billion was looted from the Gauteng health facility through irregular procurement deals and other unlawful activities.
Maumela has been implicated in investigations into three alleged syndicates linked to the looting. His alleged operation, referred to as the Maumela Syndicate, is reported to have benefited by more than R800 million.
The SIU has also referred evidence pointing to possible criminal conduct uncovered during its investigation to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for consideration and further action.
Bidding opens at 8am
Those with millions to spare can start placing their bids from 8am on Friday, 6 November.
The online auction will close on Wednesday, 11 November.
According to the auction listing, the vehicle is a 2022 Ferrari SF90 Stradale with only 357km on the clock. It has a full service history and is listed as a runner.
