The incident reportedly happened on Saturday afternoon, 7 November.
A video showing the altercation between the officer and the 33-year-old delivery driver is circulating online.
The driver has since opened a criminal case of assault and crimen injuria, which is being investigated by police.
North West police commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Peter Adams has condemned the alleged incident, saying he’s deeply concerned by the officer’s conduct. The officer was reportedly dressed in civilian clothes at the time.

Adams has ordered an internal departmental investigation to establish exactly what happened and whether the officer breached police regulations or the law.
The provincial commissioner stressed that police officers are expected to protect communities, uphold the law, and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
“We have a responsibility to serve and protect all members of our communities. Any conduct that compromises this responsibility, undermines the rights of individuals or brings the name of the service into disrepute will be addressed through the appropriate processes,” Adams said.
He further warned that no officer would be protected if found to have acted unlawfully.
“We will not shield any member found to have acted outside the law or violated the code of conduct,” he said.
Adams has urged the public to stay calm and allow both investigations to run their course.
The criminal investigation and internal departmental probe are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
