MZANSI showed up to honour one of its greatest musical icons.

Gospel and jazz legend Sizwe Zako (66), born in New Brighton, Eastern Cape, was celebrated at the Sizwe Zako & Pure Magic: Sounds of a Legend Tribute Concert, held at the Gold Reef City Lyric Theatre in Joburg on Sunday, 30 November.

Hosted by Diamond Edge Productions, the emotional night celebrated Sizwe's 45-year legacy in the music industry.

Top artists hit the stage with powerful, reimagined versions of his classic hits, filling the packed theatre with nostalgia, praise, and pure magic.

Sizwe, who helped shape the careers of gospel giants such as Rebecca Malope and Israel Mosehla, was visibly moved as the nation finally gave him his flowers.

"It means quite a lot because people appreciated the works I've done in the music industry. They decided, ‘Let's honour you', and that really means a lot," he said.

Sizwe, who has been living in Gqeberha for the past eight years, said being back in Joburg surrounded by his family made the tribute even more emotional.

"Most of my children are here, so it's been great. I'm with them now. It's wonderful," he added.

For decades, Sizwe's sound has echoed through churches, homes, streets and festivals across Mzansi. His music has comforted families, uplifted generations and inspired countless young artists, cementing him as one of SA's most influential producers.

Artists and fans united at the Lyric Theatre in Joburg to celebrate Zako's timeless contribution to SA music.

Speaking to up-and-coming artists, Sizwe offered heartfelt advice.

"Longevity in this industry depends on character. Things happen that make you happy or frustrated. If you can't calm down and fine-tune your character, you'll easily become a victim and shorten your career," he said.

These days, the self-taught pianist is focused on giving back.

He runs a music academy in Gqeberha, in partnership with Nelson Mandela University, teaching young musicians, especially pianists, while still operating a studio in Port Elizabeth.

A legend honoured. A legacy celebrated. And a new generation rising under the guidance of New Brighton's finest musical son.
