Arrest at OR Tambo highlights Carrim's ongoing defiance of court mandates

DESPITE paying R100,000 bail on Wednesday, 28 October, former ANC regional treasurer Suliman Carrim is not a free man, and his legal troubles are rapidly multiplying.

The North West businessman remains in custody over separate charges before the Musina Magistrate’s Court relating to the alleged attempted theft and cross-border movement of two Absa-financed vehicles using fraudulent documentation.

Compounding his woes, the Madlanga Commission says his legal team has now failed to follow a crucial instruction attached to his R100,000 bail release.

The condition required his lawyers to report in person within 48 hours to arrange his next appearance before the inquiry.

On Friday, 30 October, commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that while Carrim’s attorneys sent a letter regarding the judgment, it was not enough.

The bail condition requires Mr Carrim’s attorneys to take the initiative and ‘report in person, within 48 hours, to [the Commission] … in order to make the necessary arrangements for [Mr Carrim’s] next appearance before the Inquiry’,” Michaels said. “Thus the attorneys have not taken the initiative envisaged in the relevant bail condition. As a result, Mr Carrim has failed to comply with the bail condition, he said.

Carrim’s inquiry troubles began after his initial March 2026 appearance, when he failed to return for subsequent testimony, citing medical reasons.

He then refused an independent medical assessment and was dramatically arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October while attempting to fly to Dubai.

He must surrender his passport and report weekly to police in Mafikeng.

The commission is highly interested in his testimony concerning financial arrangements involving Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and the SAPS health services contract awarded to his company, Medicare24.
