The terrifying attack happened at around 3am while the family was asleep.

According to Mpumalanga police, the suspects allegedly forced their way into the house through a window before the occupants woke up and discovered them inside.

SAPS regional spokeswoman Sergeant Thulisile Magagula said police received a complaint about a shooting and rushed to the residence.

“According to reports, police received a complaint of a shooting at the residence and immediately responded,” she said.

When officers arrived, they found three male family members with gunshot wounds.

Magagula said preliminary investigations indicated that one of the suspects allegedly opened fire on a 52-year-old father and his two sons, aged 19 and 22.

“The suspects subsequently fled the scene without taking any valuables,” she said.

The 19-year-old was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services.

His 22-year-old brother and father were rushed to a medical facility, but the older son was certified dead upon arrival.

Their father remains in a critical condition.

The mother and two other children, who were also inside the house during the shooting, escaped unharmed.

Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise has vowed that police will work around the clock to ensure the suspects are arrested and brought to book.
