Uzalo, South Africa's top TV show, faces a viewership crisis, losing millions of viewers.

THERE'S an alleged panic among Uzalo producers after the show drastically lost viewers.

According to the number of viewers issued by the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa in May 2024, Uzalo is sitting at more than five million, followed by Generations: The Legacy with over four million.

Although the show is still the most watched in Mzansi, it has lost millions of fans and viewers.

Insiders said that the production team is panicking as the numbers have sparked fear that they may lose their number one position.

An insider said that producers are busy strategising on how they can win back the lost viewers.

"It's hectic in the production. Producers are afraid that they might be overtaken by other shows judging from how they had drastically lost viewers," said the insider.

Another source close to the situation revealed that Uzalo has been trying, but it looks like the attempts are fruitless.

"They had brought in people whom they think are much loved. Those people include footballer Siyabonga Nomvethe and actress Brenda Mhlongo. It's hard, but we're hoping that things will get better," said the source.

The show once reached 10 million viewers, which increased to 11 million viewers, meaning that it has lost about six million viewers.

However, the show's series producer, King David Mokwevho, said they are not shaken as they're still the number one watched show in Mzansi.

"No fear was sparked among the show's producers. The television landscape has undergone a profound transformation. Viewers are increasingly shifting from traditional appointment viewing to streaming platforms, where they enjoy the flexibility of choosing what to watch at their convenience, rather than being tied to specific broadcast times.

"The widespread availability and appeal of streaming platforms has significantly impacted television viewership numbers," said Mokwevho.

"However, we take pride in still being the most-watched show on SABC. We remain dedicated to serving our audience with compelling storylines."
