MUSIC legend William “Mr Everything” Mthethwa is quitting music after 48 years in the industry.

MUSIC legend William "Mr Everything" Mthethwa is quitting music after 48 years in the industry.

The 66-year-old musician from Lenasia, Joburg said he's leaving the music industry as a disappointed and heartbroken man.

He said he blames it all on the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and took a decision to quit as he alleges that he has been failed as a musician.

The sad Mthethwa said he happily made music during the apartheid era as the environment was good for him and others.

He said since the dawn of democracy, some artists started to suffer.

Mthethwa started his music career leading his band called William and Young Five in 1975, where he had Sizwe Zako as his keyboard player, Veli Ramawane on drums, and Blackie Sibisi as a lead guitarist.

The musician told Daily Sun that he became a solo artist in 1986 and has seen a lot in the music industry.

"This year, I'm quitting music. I started my foundation last year, William Mthethwa Foundation, and it will be focusing on old age homes in South Africa," he said.

He said that he will be renovating dilapidated old age homes, buying property, clothes, food and blankets for those who are in need.

"Helping people and touching lives has always been my passion," he said.

The Ema O Tsamae hitmaker said he is benefitting from the Southern African Music Rights Organisation for all his hard work being a musician.

"No one can claim that he was part of my rising in the industry as I did it all by myself," said Mthethwa.

He urged artists to be strong and depend on their strength.

"To my fans, sorry, I know you will miss me and miss Mr Everything," he said.

However, Mthethwa said he will only perform at gender-based violence and xenophobia events as he remains the ambassador.

The musician said he hates corruption with all his heart.

He released his latest album, No to Gender Based Violence and Xenophobia, in October.

He said the album was funded by Foundation for Human Rights.

On the other hand, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture's spokesman, Masechaba Ndlovu, said: "We are not aware of these allegations."
